RDBA mourns the loss of an industry leader, an esteemed dietitian and friend to all who met her.
Kara Elizabeth (Behlke) Ungerman passed away due to complications after giving birth to her firstborn child, Oliver Nolan Ungerman on Aug. 4. Before she passed, Kara and her husband Andy were able to share the miraculous moment of his birth.
Kara pursued her passion for all things nutritious and delicious while attending University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where she graduated with a B.S. in Dietetics and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Kara’s dedicated pursuit of this career continued as an intern at the Yale Medical Center; working for the New York Beef Council; as a dietitian with Hy-Vee in Marion, Iowa; Corporate Dietitian and Director of Brand Strategy at Schnucks in St. Louis; and Vice President of Nutrition Health & Wellness Transformation at the National Pork Board in Des Moines, IA. Throughout her career, she served as an industry leader and advocate for the profession. Her passion and zest for life was apparent to everyone she met along the way.
Kara and her vivacious personality will be missed, but her legacy will live on. A scholarship fund will be established at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in her memory. Her husband Andy believes this is a great way to honor Kara and the amazing work she has done across her profession. While the details will be worked out in the next few months, we wanted to provide the opportunity to contribute now.
